BLD Magazine: A Preview Of Johnson Vs Mccall
Posted by: Mike - June 14th, 2012

UFC’s main event on Friday will be a battle of Mighty Mouse vs. Uncle Creepy. These are the two respective nicknames of Demetrius Johnson and Ian McCall. Both competitors have a combined record of 25 wins, 4 losses and 2 draws in MMA Competition. This should make for an interesting matchup in which one competitor will take that all-important next step to title glory. This fight is a rematch of their bout that ended in a draw three months ago. The winner of this fight will advance to the finals of the flyweight tournament and earn a date with Joseph Benavidez.

From a statistical standpoint, it seems like Ian McCall has an advantage. According to, Ian McCall has a clear advantage in terms of striking and takedown defense. Ian McCall’s striking defense percentage is 69% while Demetrius Johnson’s striking defense percentage is 61%. McCall has a huge advantage in terms of takedown defense. McCall’s takedown defensive percentage is 89% while Johnson’s defensive percentage is 49%. On the other hand, Demetrius Johnson has an advantage in striking and takedown offense. Johnson has a 47% striking offensive percentage as opposed to McCall’s 35%. In terms of takedown offense, Johnson has a 59% takedown offense while Ian McCall has a 43% takedown offense. One fighter seems to be superior on offense while the other is more potent defensively. Clearly, something has to give.

Demetrius Johnson is currently the #3 ranked flyweight in the world according to Sherdog magazine. He is also in the bantamweight division. He is looking to get back in the win column after his aforementioned draw to Ian McCall as well as a loss to Dominick Cruz in a battle for the UFC bantamweight championship in October 2011. Demetrius Johnson made his UFC debut in February 2011 and defeated Norifumi Yamamoto. Three months later, he would score another victory over Miguel Torres in UFC 130. Demetrius Johnson is used to adversity. He never met his biological father and his stepfather was an abusive parent.

On the other hand, McCall looks to make his second-ever UFC fight count this time around. McCall has been an MMA fighter for 10 years and has competed in MMA promotions such as World Extreme Cagefighting and Tachi Palace Fights. Like Johnson, Ian McCall also has a loss on his record against Dominick Cruz in a 2009 fight in the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. He is the top-ranked flyweight according to Sherdog magazine. He was propelled to the top-spot due to a victory over Jussier Da Silva in his flyweight debut last year.

The first fight between Demetrius Johnson and Ian McCall won the honor of being “Fight of the Night”. One can only hope that Part 2 is just as entertaining.
